Apple may launch iPhone with in-display fingerprint sensor in China

The last time we learned that Apple was working on iPhone models with fingerprint sensors on the screen, the iPhone X was not even out. Many rumors said in early 2017 that the iPhone 8, which we later learned that would be the iPhone X could present a fingerprint sensor on the screen, a technology that Apple had been developing for years and that was not yet available in the market.

However, Apple eventually decided not to use Touch ID after perfecting a more sophisticated and more secure authentication method: facial identification. so the fingerprint sensor simply “disappeared” from Apple’s top smartphones.

The truth is that the fingerprint sensor built into the screen was not yet ready to be mass-produced at the time, as is necessary for a device with as many sales as the iPhone.

But two years later, the rumor returns only this time comes with an unexpected turnaround. According to the GlobalTimes website, via GSMArena, China will have a unique design for smartphones: an iPhone with virtually full screen in the front area where the iPhone instead of having Face Recognition will have a fingerprint sensor below the screen.

Citing a report from caijing.com.cn, the site says that Apple is seeking to reduce the manufacturing costs of the iPhone to launch a device more accessible to the Chinese market, and this option may be the solution since the various sensors for Face ID are expensive.

In this way, the new phone will let you have the face ID, face recognition system of the iPhone, and employ a fingerprint function under the display, according to industry sources the manufacturing chain. An industry insider revealed that the main factor is even cutting costs and taking into account that Chinese is one of the countries with low purchasing power, the idea may be to entice customers who are unable to acquire a top iPhone.

The fingerprint sensor on the screen have evolved over the past two years with the Galaxy S10 to have presented the most advanced version: ultrasonic sensors, but no doubt that the equipment we’ve tested, also with these sensors, such as Huawei Mate 2 ‘Pro or the Huawei P30 Pro, is not far behind.

However, it is still very surprising for Apple to downgrade iPhones from Face ID to Touch ID, even if that reduces costs. It would be even stranger to launch such an iPhone in China alone. The abundance of iPhone users in other markets certainly would also appreciate an iPhone with an almost full screen in the front area, and of course, a more interesting price of the equipment.

However, as there is no official information, this information should be viewed with some suspicion.
