8 Apps that keep your smartphone safe

When you search the term “security applications” on Google, you receive a very extensive list of anti-virus and anti-malware applications. Unfortunately, this is a very narrow view of what’s in Google Play itself. There are several applications that can increase your security without being an antivirus. Most of them are fairly easy to use and do not consume a ton of device features. Here are some applications that help keep your system protected.

1. Bouncer

Bouncer is one of the newest security applications. It manages your permissions. We do not always want some application to have access permission all the time. The Bouncer is a “manager” of permissions. You can, for example, activate the location on Facebook and the Bouncer asks if you just want to temporarily. At the given time it will automatically remove the permission. This way you can use apps more freely, without worrying about entering the settings at all times that you do not want them to see your location. It’s priced at $ 3.59, but it’s worth it. In addition to avoiding eavesdropping, the Bouncer can also schedule any other permissions, such as which app can access your camera, and so on.

2. Find My Device

Finding my Google device used to be the “Android Device Manager”. The name has changed, but the app still does the same thing, which is to track the location of your smartphone. The application can also play sounds for easy localization. You can also reset your device, display a message and remotely lock your phone. We highlight in it the data reset tool. This keeps the device safe, even if you can not recover your photos and videos (so it’s always good to use Google photos). This is totally free, with no advertising and no in-app purchases.

3. GlassWire: Data Usage Monitor

GlassWire is one of the newest security applications. It allows you to see which applications are consuming your data. You get a real-time graph that shows how much data your applications are consuming. In addition, you’ll receive alerts to let you know when a new app is sucking data. This is a great way to control your hungrier apps. More than that, you can see any strange activity that may be happening in the background. Its primary use is to ensure that you do not reach your carrier deductible limit.

4. Haven: Keep Watch (BETA)

Haven is also a recent security app, both that is in beta. It allows you to turn a second device into a security device. It works by alerting you whenever the safety device is “disturbed”. For example, if you leave the security smartphone in your luggage and someone moves your suitcase, the application will warn you. It can also record sounds, detect changes in light (say, someone, opened your luggage) and detect power loss if the device is connected. The app is completely free, at least in this beta. And as it is not yet a definitive version, there may be errors. But, something that is new, always needs testing. So, do some home-based operations before you use it for travel, for example.

5. LastPass Password Manager

LastPass is one of the best password manager applications out there. It allows you to store passwords for websites, PINs, and other confidential information for quick retrieval. It’s all hidden behind a master password of your choice. It’s infinitely safer than just putting that information anywhere else. The free version provides most features. The pro version adds some features, some syncing options, and a few more things. but using the free version it is already possible to protect your passwords and, in case any item that is not available for free, you simply buy. It is one of the most important security applications since passwords release everything.

6. Resilio Sync

Resilio Sync lets you create your own cloud storage. It turns your everyday everyday computer into a cloud storage server. The application helps you to synchronize files between your PC and phone. Think of it as Google Drive or Dropbox, but in a way that only you know (and are sure) where your files are at all times. This is great for more sensitive data. It’s also great for those who do not trust cloud storage. The application is easy to use even for beginners. It is also totally free. And it’s one of the most underestimated security applications.

7. Signal Private Messenger

It is simply an alternative to WhatsApp, Telegram, and SMS. The intent is to use it so that no one knows there is another communication app on your phone. And it’s safer than other messaging apps, with enhanced messaging encryption, phone calls, and SMS. In fact, he became famous after being used by none other than Edward Snowden, the agent of the NSA , the US national security agency. It’s totally free and with no in-app purchases.

8. Tor project (four applications)

Project Tor is probably one of the most obvious security and privacy choices on virtually any platform. Unfortunately, their Android apps are not as robust as the computer versions, but they’re getting there. For now, you have access to Firefox, Tor Browser (still in beta!) And Orbot, which is a proxy application that helps other applications use Tor technology to remain anonymous. The browser is still under construction, but we do not have any bug reports. Orbot is definitely a solid application worth downloading. The project also recently launched Ooniprobe, an application that allows you to check if your Internet is blocking your connection to some sites. All of these are excellent security applications for those who are a bit more advanced users.
