The JMAP protocol could retire the old IMAP as an email standard. It is more flexible and easy to set up. Start as early as 2019?
The future of the email is called JMAP: Here is the new protocol
The 2019 could be the year of abandonment of a historic protocol which allowed us all to stay in touch. The IMAP, used by emails to be received correctly, is destined to be replaced by the JMAP, a new and efficient communication protocol also recognized by the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force).
The new protocol, created by a team of experts with the works started in 2014, after 4 years of development has pulled out the JMAP, a new communication protocol that will be used for e-mails, and that has been reprogrammed to fill the shortcomings of the IMAP as the configuration in the mobile environment.
The JMAP is based on JSON and HTTP and is faster and lighter than the IMAP and also has some features that could make it official and public in a short time.
JMAP features
- Fast
- Associate a message with a unique ID
- It is Open Source
- Same configuration for incoming and outgoing mail, so easy to configure
If the developers succeed in passing it as a standard from the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force), then as early as next year, we will see the first mail exchanges on the new protocol and from 2020 spread very quickly everywhere.
So only positive notes for the JMAP that has all the credentials that become the new standard for mail, also because it has several functions that allow you to make the most of the new protocol as the ability to plan the sending, get return receipts or cancel the delivery of an email.
There is to overcome the obstacle Google that has developed its own protocol for GMail and that could worry the new JMAP.
