Random Access Memory, commonly known as RAM, is simply memory … It’s one of the most important components of any computer! However, how much memory do we really need? 8GB? 16 GB? 32 or 64!?
In fact, the amount of memory you will need will depend on two factors, the amount you want, and the amount of money you are willing to pay … But always taking into account, what you really need!
RAM is not only important on a computer, but it is also one of the most important specifications on a smartphone or tablet. Still, let’s focus on our day-to-day ally, the PC.
How much RAM do you need? First, some guidelines!
- 2GB: A ridiculous amount of RAM, which today we only find in mid-range / low-end smartphones or tablets.
- 4GB: An amount of memory, which we find in the most budget notebooks. Sufficient for light work on Windows or Chrome OS.
- 8GB: A completely normal amount of memory for Windows and MacOS systems. That’s enough for the vast majority of users.
- 16GB: Ideal for players and professional work.
- 32GB +: An amount of memory for Enthusiasts or workstations.
It must be borne in mind, that buying more RAM, does not mean that you will have a faster PC … You can be in the background, spending money for nothing! Buy what you really need, for the use you give to your PC.
What is RAM!!
I know most of the readers following Techkhiladi are well informed! But still, let’s try to explain what this component is.
Many users, who are a bit out of this world, think that this type of memory is the same as an HDD or SSD, but it really has nothing to do with it.
In the background, the more RAM you have on your PC, the more programs you can get open at the same time!
It is true that even with less RAM, it can open several programs, but performance will be significantly lower, as the PC will start to use the slower memory of the storage drives.
However, while all this is true, a computer with more RAM is only faster, to some extent …
After all, having a bigger secretary for half a dozen roles just means that you’ve spent too much money in a space that you really do not need.
Applications that need lots of RAM
Most of the time, the application that more RAM will spend, is even the operating system of your PC! Similarly, we also have our friend ‘Google Chrome’, which is known for its memory requirements.
Of course, you can not do much about the memory that the Operating Systems use … But more RAM will ensure that an agile system, and of course, more Chrome tabs open at the same time.
In fact, programs begin to use more RAM when their complexity increases … That is, while simple games like Minesweeper, will use a ridiculous amount, an Excel spreadsheet with hundreds/thousands of lines, or a Photoshop project, or even a game, will use several GBs of RAM.
RAM is getting cheaper!
The world of memory for Desktop is now something quite appealing, after several declines in the price of DDR4 kits. In addition, you can change, or add more modules as you wish.
However, once again I stress that you should only buy what you need … It is not worth buying a car with 600 horses, to walk at 50KM / h within the localities.
That said, 8GB is a good starting point! In my opinion, it’s really the least for a recent PC. But I always recommend, or almost always, 16GB of RAM.
More than this, only if you are a professional in the field of image/video editing, or similar. Or if you have to deal with large databases, gigantic video files or research and research programs.
